FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE CUMMINS RECEIVES EPA 2010 CERTIFICATION FOR HEAVY-DUTY ISX15 COLUMBUS, Ind. (Dec. ??, 2009) - Cummins Inc. today received certification from the Environmental Protection Agency for its big-bore ISX15 engine. This engine certification validates that the Cummins ISX15 engine for on-highway applications meets the near-zero emissions levels required for all engines manufactured in 2010. The new EPA regulations, which take effect Jan. 1, 2010, are the most stringent in the world, with Oxides of Nitrogen (NOx) and Particulate Matter (PM) emissions levels of 0.2 grams and 0.01 grams per brake-horsepower-hour, respectively. "Receiving the formal certificate is an important step in the process to enter 2010 with customer-ready products," said Ed Pence, Vice President and General Manager - Heavy-Duty Engine Business for Cummins. "This confirms that customers can be confident in the technology choice we've made to meet the new, more stringent emissions standards." All of Cummins on-highway engines, including the ISX15, will meet the EPA 2010 emissions standards by employing Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) technology. Cummins committed to using SCR technology because of a step change in performance, which provides a significant increase in efficiency and durability. Cummins proprietary SCR technology will utilize copper zeolite, which provides a much higher NOx conversion efficiency than other catalyst materials. "Our decision to use copper zeolite in the SCR catalyst has given us the ability to provide customers with the most fuel-efficient engine for the heavy-duty truck market," Pence said. The ISX15 provides fuel economy leadership for the heavy-duty Class 8 truck market along with better performance and better reliability compared with today's industry-leading ISX. The ISX15 features the Cummins XPI fuel system, an enhanced cooled-EGR system, a single VGT(TM) Turbocharger and the new Cummins Aftertreatment System. The Cummins Aftertreatment System consists of the new SCR catalyst, which is coupled with the Cummins Particulate Filter that was introduced in 2007. Cummins will have a complete lineup of certified SCR-equipped engines to serve on-highway market applications for 2010. To best serve customers in the vocational and less-than-truckload markets, the Cummins ISX11.9 will be introduced in 2010. The ISX11.9 is on target for limited production in mid-2010, with full production commencing in late summer 2010. Cummins will submit the necessary documentation for EPA 2010 certification in 2010 prior to the ISX11.9 introduction to the marketplace later that year. Additionally, Cummins will introduce the ISB6.7, ISC8.3 and ISL9 MidRange engines ideally suited for medium-duty truck, school bus, fire and emergency, and recreational vehicle markets. Cummins has submitted applications for EPA certification of its MidRange engines and expects the documents prior to full production beginning January 2010.
